Netzstruktur unregelmäßig / irregular mesh

Beitrag von Viv »

Sehr geehrtes Support-Team,

A point and a segment intersect.“

Fehlermeldung Netgen:
Error Initialising the STL Geometry....Aborting!!

Fehlermeldung Tetgen:
Error: Invalid PLC! Two subfaces intersect.

Sorry i can't write this in German.

Others have struggled over getting a good .stl into Aurora.

There are many good rules such as removing fillets and chamfers and simplifying the geometry - all that helps.

However another user 'selopez' has come up with a procedure that is extremly reliable for a good .stl and it also assures a fast FEA mesh using tetgen in Aurora of very complex geometries.

Please goto ''forum/V2 freeware/'How to' and choose THE NETGEN/TETGEN CONNECTION by selopez (at page bottom).

open up document ' Glrt19...etc - message will say it cannot be found here , then asks 'open in new window ?'
accept this. ( you may need a google account for this to work - i did!)

Then the document of selopezs' opens up. He has made a tremendous effort to understand what are the
problems with poor stl's / steps and why they sometimes crash or freeze Aurora.

It is a long document and i do not understand it all. HOWEVER, there is a procedure at p11 chapter 2. Optimization of T16 meshes from .stl models (POM).

This outlines free software called NETGEN ( inc. link) that allows you to import .stl / .stp / .igs and visually ( and automatically) analyse them for errors, autocorrect errors and many options for refining meshes globally or individual faces to say improve a facetting on a round / sphere / fillet etc. It can then output an assured high quality .stl which when loaded in Aurora, be converted into 3D Tetgen mesh VERY easily and FAST too.
Following 'Selopezs' guidelines, what you see in Netgen as an external / surface mesh, can be almost exactly
what Aurora's Tetgen 3D volumetric meshing will follow providing you choose a similar maximum edge length
as Selopezs' recommendations.

If you don't want to use the Netgen surface meshing program, but still want quality .stls', then there's a program called NetFabb studio basic. You can examine and correct / check and output an ASCII .stl. It's all very visually clear.

The only geometry i have a problem with is broken cones - i usually just flatten the point away or rotate the surface- .step then exports it fine. I leave chamfers, fillets etc. Small edges can always be a problem though but Netgen can overcome these too.
Obviously, a simplified model will always mesh / run faster and in most cases small details are not necessary for an accurate analysis ( as all analyses are approximate and based on assumptions ) but sometimes ( and really only sometimes!) holes and all the small details must be taken into consideration.

Before this procedure, i spent ages and ages in trying out different .stl / .stp / tetgen/ netgen / linear / quad options and still Aurora FEA mesh sometimes failed - especially the attractive, regular Netgen mesh!

Get the triangular mesh right in the Netgen program as Selopez recommends - you will have to experiment for best results. There is no 'help' with this program!

Hope this helps - it will take you a day ( at least) to understand / experiment with the additional free software. but it will reward you with consistant/ efficient Aurora Tetgen meshing, which results in the
lowest computing time.
Remember to, using this method still allows the refinement ( sub division) of Auroras elements.
Cheers...

I’m glad to see that the procedure I described is useful for another Z88AURORA user. I imagine that you experienced the same that I: overcome the meshing barrier changed my relationship with FEA. Regarding the procedure, I'm sure you have already found ways to improve it. I myself have been refining some of its recommendations. It would be great if we could share observations and experiences.

Through another post from you, I see that we are at least two who love the Surface Modeller / IGES combination. Maybe someday we can form a "Fan Club" ;-)

Best regards

Hello TAH1712

Thank you for the huge effort YOU made to try to help me.
You are right, selopez was really hardworking and I appreciate that selopez shares the results.
I'll have a closer look at it during the weekend but it seems that I fail right from the start:
I can't even import a STL-file into NETGEN. :(
But IGES and STEP works. Hence, Z88 is able to mesh helical gears with selopez' procedure.
It takes its time, that's true, but I'm sure with a bit of experience the mesh will become suitable.
:P
Kind regards

Viv.

Oh i'm very pleased - but really it's all down to Selopez. Drop him a thank you sometime.

There is quite a lot of experimenting with Netgen to get better surfacing meshing. BUT, oh boy is it worth it!
Take a look at: Mesh>Meshing Options>Mesh Size> Max , Min and the Grading ( top pane.)
Also: Geometry>Edit Mesh Face Size - to select face by face the view must be in 'Geometry' under the Geometry display bar ( right top screen). Double click face to select, change the value, hit change. Close. Double click empty screen to de highlight the picked surface ( small bug). Then, Generate Mesh. ( no need to delete the old mesh).
Also, play around with: Mesh>Meshing Options>Mesh Size>'Elements per edge' and 'Elements per Curvature Radius'. Here you will be able to globally set meshing around spheres / fillets etc. if important.

The 'iges / step topology doctor' is your real friend and use it with the Netgen 4.9.13 window pane to follow executions - it gives good feedback for compute processing progress and very handy prompts on missing surfaces, short edges etc.

This is about my sum knowledge on using Netgen. Unfortunately there's no 'help' menu so only by experimentation can advancement be made.

It makes working with Aurora much less frustrating.
Good Luck.

No probs Viv- it certainly does help to get a few good pointers and talking of pointers...

Prof. Frank Rieg mentioned last summer (seems a very long time ago given the UK's start to spring!) they were in talks with their publishers concerning an English translation of his recent new book - FEA for Engineers - 4th edition. Apparently, the previous edition was well received / respected in Germany.
It should be very interesting as its specifically for practicing 'designer' and 'designer level engineers' etc. and not just theorists. Also, the examples, would of course been done in Aurora V2.
Unfortunately it hasn't yet been seen.
Chat is, an english translation is being worked on currently, although i do not know the priority - still the Aurora Team seem a cohesive bunch and have in the past been repeatedly good to their word on promised
timescales. Sadly, there was no mention of a promise in this respect :|
On a another topic: I hope you're on version V2a. The accelerated computations and multiple processor support are a fantastic upgrade.
